Police Ban Public Parade of Suspects: A Step Towards Upholding Human Rights

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has reaffirmed the ban on public parades of criminal suspects by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force. This directive aims to uphold the fundamental human rights of all citizens and align with global best practices in policing.¹

The ban is a significant step towards promoting a culture of respect for human rights within the police force. It recognizes that public parades of suspects can be dehumanizing and undermine the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, emphasized that the directive has been communicated to all police commands and zones. He urged the media and the public to support the ban by promoting responsible reporting and ethical journalism.

This move is in line with international human rights standards, which prioritize the protection of human dignity throughout the judicial process. By banning public parades of suspects, the Nigeria Police Force demonstrates its commitment to upholding the rights and dignity of all individuals, including those suspected of criminal activity.
