Several major Nigerian cities, including Lagos, were plunged into darkness on Friday following a major collapse of the national power grid.
The latest outage comes just days after the federal government touted a “historic rise” in power generation to 6,000MW. However, a sudden grid disturbance saw generation plummet from around 4,000MW earlier in the day to below 1,000MW by 2 PM.
At its peak, power generation on Friday morning stood at 5,284MW, but by 4 PM, only a meager 803MW was available, with many power plants yet to resume supply.
Confirming the outage, the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) notified customers of the system failure. “Dear esteemed customer, please be informed that we experienced a system outage today, 07/03/2025, at 14:00hrs, affecting supply within our network,” the company stated, assuring customers that restoration efforts were ongoing in collaboration with key stakeholders.
